Micro projects

Every year Moroni High School (MHS) replaces all their old CPU's (computers). Sometimes there are only 3-4 and other times there could be 15.  They donate these CPU's to the local High Schools here.  Last year they had 8 and were able to donate the monitors to go with them, but alas, they had no cables to attach the CPU's to the monitors.  Our supervisor, Uraia, who lives in Fiji, was able to find some extra cables and bring them to us.  This year Moroni had 15 CPU's but had no monitors or cables.  Uraia suggested we submit a "micro project"  which would allow us to get small things such as monitors without going through the whole project process each time.  Who knew we could do that?!!  So far we have bought 4 monitors and cables to give to Betio Junior Secondary School. They are not "ready to receive them yet", so we will wait to deliver them.  However, we have also been able to buy a water pump for the School of Nursing who had no water to flush their toilets with. They were having to fill up a bucket with well water, pour it into the toilet tank, and then flush.  Such a small item like a pump can make a big difference in the sanitation and comfort of people.

We also spoke with the head of the school of Nursing about getting new computers and some equipment for the school.  We are in the process of getting quotes and other things necessary to put in a project.  This will be a large project.

We received a request from the Kiribati Protestant Church (KPC) wanting school furniture for a new High School they are building on Tamana, one of the outer islands.  The cool thing about Temana is that KPC is the only religion found on that island.  They are very strict about not wanting any proselyting.  I get it.  They are a very unified community and a different religion would cause dissention.  Elder and Sister Brock paved the way for us by not waring their name badges when bringing humanitarian aide to them.  Now they are coming to us.  Their headquarters are here on Tarawa.  They were very pleasant people to talk to.  We left them with "email us a quote of what you want- make sure the quote includes all shipping."  I think they will follow through.

Whenever we can't use the church credit card for a project, (which is often because many places here don't take credit cards - cash or check only)  we go to Otomie for a check.

Keith working with Otomie, she is the best!!

Up to now, we have opted to attend our local ward where Kiribati is spoken. We just wanted to immerse ourselves in their culture and we are glad we made that decision. However, we attended the English speaking ward which consists of Moroni High School students this last Sunday.  My prayer was that my cup would be filled and that prayer was answered.  I needed the spiritual boost.  My favorite part was singing hymns in English.  My second favorite was understanding the sacrament prayers.

I love our new apartment.  I see the most beautiful sunsets out my back door every night.  The only problem is the internet is not very strong and drops a lot.  Small price to pay for God's beauty.

Another beautiful sunset from our back door.

Most of the senior missionaries went hiking and swimming in North Tarawa  last Saturday.  It was a fun day. Dr. Fisher is a visiting Dentist from the US. He will stay a month and help Dr. Duke.  There is so much need here. Many people live in pain because of the lack of dentists.  His help is greatly appreciated.

Love you all.
